Below is a list of board-certified veterinary cardiologists by state (also including Canada, Brazil, Switzerland). When you make an appointment, state that the appointment is for cardiac OFA.
Cardiology clinics that provide exams at reduced rates are also sometimes held at dog shows; check premium lists for information.
To decrease the incidence of hereditary early-onset endocardiosis, the recommendation for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels is to breed from heart-clear (by a cardiologist) breeding stock over the age of 2½, who have parents that were heart clear (again by a cardiologist) at age 5. In lines where early-onset endocaridiosis prevails, similar recommendations may be made for Japanese Chin.
Otherwise, breeding animals in Cavalier, English Toy, or Chin breeding programs should be auscultated by a cardiologist at ages 3, 4, and 5. Any dog who has a mitral valve murmur prior to the age of 5 should probably not be used in breeding programs without careful scrutiny.
